This exercise serves two purposes. The first is to help you develop a little more practice at a very problematic task: matching. One of the things we find most frustrating when drawing a portrait is trying to get both sides of the face looking like a matched, united whole. It requires on our part the ability to translate and visualize, to reverse the image in our head.
The second reason I want you to do this assignment is to see where you are at when it comes to drawing portraits. I want to see, before instruction, what you already know how to do.
Take the image provided below and draw directly on it. You are trying to match values, shapes, and proportions as closely as possible.
