For this assignment I want you to play around with photography a bit.
You are to take an original photo. Your photo is to have the following characteristics:
- Black and white. Alter your photo to only be black and white, with no color at all. You may do this with simple photo editing of via settings on your camera/phone. We want the photo to demonstrate a good range of values, from white to black with 3-5 grays.
- Demonstrates a juxtaposition. A juxtaposition means that there are two diverse or opposite things in close proximity to each other. So maybe your picture has a flame, but also features water. Maybe you choose to photograph something man-made, but it is surrounded by nature. The form this juxtaposition takes is entirely up to you, but it should be clear, and it should be obvious, without you having to explain it.
- Uses the rule of thirds. Rule of thirds is a compositional trick where the focal point(s) are aligned along an axes or at the intersection of axes. This is done to move the focal point out of the center and thus create a more dynamic composition.
On some cameras/phones this is a setting that can be turned on or off.
Please note, on the final photograph, we should not actually see the grid lines.
This is due Monday, 10/29, by 11 p.m. This is a formative grade. Your photo should be placed in your process portfolio (which we should be setting up this week), and labeled as “Rule of Thirds, (your name).”
