IB Comparison of Art #1

For this week’s assignment, we are going to try a variation on the critique, and practice a skill that will be vital for your Comparative Essay.

Assignment:  Compare and Contrast
Below are two works that I have selected for you.  What I want you to do is to look for and discuss similarities or differences in the following components of the work:

  • Elements of Art (any)
  • Principles of Design (any)
  • Content
  • Medium or Material
  • Style
  • Technique
  • Iconography
  • Narrative
  • Purpose or Use
  • Historical or cultural context

You are not writing a true critique, but critiquing skills may very well be useful.

You may want to do some research on these works, as they are probably unfamiliar to you.  The images and their credit line information has been included below.

The image on the left is:  Venus of Urbino, by Titian.  Italy, 16th century, oil on canvas 4’x6’

The image on the right is:  Olympia, by Edouard Manet.  France, 1863 CE, oil on canvas 4’x6’

Format and Submission
You may submit this as a Word or PowerPoint document (or equivalent).  Your comparison may include charts or annotated pictures, but should also include in depth writing which usually means paragraphs.

Your submission should be placed in your Comparative Essay Folder within our shared Dropbox folder.

This is due Tuesday, 2/20, by 11 pm.  It will be a formative grade.
